Aviva's 9-month sales rise 12 percent

Aviva PLC, Britain's second-largest insurer, on Tuesday said life and pension sales rose 12 percent for the first nine months of the year on strong growth in North America and Europe.
Life and pension sales increased to 25.7 billion pounds ($40 billion) for the nine months to Sept. 30, up from 22.9 billion pounds for the same period a year earlier, the insurer said in its third-quarter management statement. The company did not break down its third-quarter sales or report how much profit it made.
Aviva said flat sales in its home British market were offset by higher sales in its international markets. In North America, sales soared by 39 percent to 3.8 billion pounds ($5.9 billion). In Europe, sales increased by 16 percent to 12.1 billion pounds ($18.9 billion).
The insurer also said it had a strong capital position, with a capital surplus of 1.3 billion pounds on Oct. 24.
"These are unprecedented times," said Chief Executive Andrew Moss, "but people around the world are still saving and buying insurance from brands they trust."
Shares jumped 10.4 percent to 271 pence ($4.22) in early trading on the London Stock Exchange.
