TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan’s former Examination Yuan President and Confucius’ 77th generation grandson Koong Der-cheng (孔德成) died of heart and lung failure in the Taipei Branch of the Tzuchi Hospital at 10:50 am October 28 at the age of 89.
Despite a little physical disability, Koong’s health had been quite well for the past few years until this year. According to the hospital, Koong was admitted in intensive care for the septicemia and heart and lung failure induced by the pneumonia on Oct. 20. He was stabilized by medication and a respirator during his hospitalization. However, due to the lack of oxygen in the brain, his condition aggravated this morning and then died with his relatives on his side.
Koong was Confucius’ 77th generation grandson. Koong’s family had passed on the title of “Duke Yansheng” (衍聖公) since the 46th generation grandson of Confucius in 1055. Koong became the last generation to inherit the title that lasted 890 years. In 1935, the government changed the “Duke of Yansheng” to “Great Saint Worshiping Official”(大成至聖先師奉祀官), the only position passing down generation after generation.
