TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Director-General of the National Police Agency Wang Cho-chiun (王卓鈞) confirmed today that DPP Tainan City Councilor Wang Ding-yu (王定宇) had received threats calling for him to apologize for the attack on Zhang Mingqing (張銘清), China’s Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait Vice Chairman, but Wang refused and asked the police for protection. The police have dispatched personnel to protect Wang and his family members.

Wang Cho-chiun said that Wang Ding-yu was invited via a text message sent by a friend on the afternoon of October 23 to go to a certain place in Taipei City. Some people at the site asked him to apologize for Zhang’s incident but Wang refused. Wang Cho-chiun said that Wang Ding-yu was not willing to report to the police or to make a written statement, merely asking the police to provide protection.

Wang Ding-yu was invited to Taipei three days after the Zhang incident by his friend Huang Ju-yi, (黃如意) the alleged “deep throat” of the Kaohsiung MRT scandal. Huang hit Wang on the chest with his fist two to three times in a three-hour incident which was recorded on videotape by a TV station.

Wang today held a press conference to claim that some people with connections to China wanted to vent their anger for the Zhang incident and asked him to sign an apology note, which he refused to do. Wang explained that his friend tried to resolve the situation for him by hitting him on the chest, so he did not report it to the police.
