Brazil's ruling coalition gains city halls

Brazil's ruling coalition has won nearly two-thirds of the mayoral races in weekend elections _ giving it a boost ahead of the 2010 presidential race.
Electoral authorities say the Workers Party of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will control 566 city halls after Sunday's election, an increase of 36 percent from the 2004 elections.
The Brazilian Democratic Movement Party won in 1,205 mayoral races _ or a jump of 14 percent. That party is aligned with Silva.
Overall, Silva's coalition took 63 percent of the nation's city halls.
Analysts say that gives the ruling coalition a lot of access to reach voters for the 2010 campaign.
