France vets Colombian rebel before granting asylum

The French president's office says a background check is being carried out on a Colombian leftist rebel to ensure he qualifies for asylum in France.
Colombian President Alvaro Uribe has said the rebel known as Isaza can receive asylum in France for helping a 62-year-old Colombian lawmaker escape from the FARC rebel group.
Late last year, France offered asylum to FARC rebels who demobilize. It was part of an effort to secure the release of hostages, including Ingrid Betancourt, a dual French national who was freed in July.
President Nicolas Sarkozy's office said Monday the asylum offer stands, if there are no outstanding judicial matters involving the rebel, and that a check of Isaza is under way to verify that "this condition has been fulfilled."
