Indian stock index plunges 6.1 percent

India's benchmark Sensex index plunged to its lowest in nearly three years on Monday amid fears that the worst of the financial crisis is not yet over.
The Sensex fell 528.62 points, or 6.08 percent, to 8,172.45, its lowest since Nov. 2005.
Banking, power, metals, and information technology stocks led declines in the broad sell off.
Software services company Wipro Ltd. fell 17.07 percent in midday trading. Tata Power was down 13.83 percent. Real estate developer DLF Ltd. plunged 12.80, and the State Bank of India was down 10.58 percent.
Foreign investors have continued to pull money _ $12.1 billion since January _ from Indian equities, pushing the Sensex down 61 percent this year, and punishing the rupee.
