Valencia moves top after 1-1 at Recreativo

Valencia confirmed its best ever Spanish league start Sunday after David Villa's second half goal gave it a 1-1 draw at Valladolid to keep it at the top of the standings.
The Spain striker continued his incredible goal scoring run since a victorious European championship campaign, putting a loose ball in at the near post in the 62nd minute after goalkeeper Asier Riesgo's impressive stop of Juanma Mata's header.
Valencia leads the table with 20 points and will likely remain top on goal difference even if Villarreal beats Atletico Madrid later Sunday.
FC Barcelona has 19 points after a 5-0 demolition of Almeria on Saturday, two ahead of both Villarreal Sevilla, which fell 1-0 to Malaga.
Real Madrid, which has 16 points, plays at the Santiago Bernabeu later Sunday against Athletic Bilbao.
Joaquin Sanchez nearly put Valencia ahead in the 30th after beating Riego with a chip that sailed wide of the far post.
Recreativo took the lead in the 47th thanks to a swift counterattack.
Javier Camunas moved clear of defender Emiliano Morretti after taking Javi Guerrero's pass inside the area to beat Valencia goalkeeper Renan with a high shot at the near post.
Joaquin gathered Manuel Fernandes' long pass along the right flank before crossing to find the unmarked Mata for a hard header that Riesgo got a hand to. Two Recreativo defenders failed to clear the bouncing ball as Villa, who led Euro 2008 with four goals, matched Samuel Eto'o of Barcelona for the league lead with nine goals.
Renan stopped a close-range shot from Adrian Colunga with a minute to play.
Sevilla, which endured its first defeat in 11 games in all competitions, would have joined Valencia on 20 points with a seventh straight victory on Sunday.
Adrian Lopez ended Andres Palop's club record scoreless streak at 511 minutes in the 16th when the Malaga striker coolly slotted a right-footed strike underneath the Sevilla goalkeeper to boost the newly promoted club into sixth.
In other results from Sunday's eighth round of games, it was: Numancia 2, Racing Santander 1; Mallorca 3, Espanyol 0; Deportivo La Coruna 0, Sporting Gijon 3; and Getafe 1 Valladolid 0.
Numancia moved out of last place after Domingo Cisma's goal in the fifth-minute of injury time gave the team its first victory since an opening day win over Barcelona.
Numancia led through Javier Barkero in the 26th before Mohammed Tchite's penalty made it 1-1 a minute before Cisma scored.
David Barral scored one goal and set up another to lead Sporting Gijon to its third straight win and its first at El Riazor stadium.
Barral scored in the 22nd from the penalty spot. Four minutes later on a counterattack, he played a perfectly placed pass for Carmelo Gonzalez to slide the ball into an empty net. Diego Castro scored the third goal with a solo effort in the 85th.
Aritz Aduriz scored with two headers for Mallorca as Espanyol goalkeeper Carlos Kameni made several errors.
Aduriz headed into an open goal in the 48th after Kameni came out to claim the short cross. The Cameroon goalkeeper couldn't reach the Basque striker's second in the 60th, and was caught out by Fernando Varela's chip in the 76th.
Cata Diaz scored the winner for Getafe by heading past goalkeeper Segio Asenjo despite appearing to be offside.
Real Betis beat Osasuna 2-0 on Saturday and Sporting Gijon's subsequent victory dropped winless Osasuna into last place.
