Finns vote in municipal elections

Finns are voting in municipal elections across the country to choose from 38,500 candidates vying for more than 10,000 seats on councils.
Polling stations opened at 9 a.m. (0700 GMT) Sunday in stormy weather and were to close at 8 p.m. (1800 GMT), with results announced early Monday.
More than 1 million voters, or 24 percent of the electorate, went to the polls in a week of advance voting that ended Wednesday. In the previous municipal elections in 2004, 58 percent of eligible voters turned out _ the second lowest rate in more than 50 years.
The voting is not expected to influence the composition of the center-right coalition government or its main lines of policy. Election issues have been dominated by debates over public services, including health care, education and child care.
