Last-ditch effort to salvage coalition talks

Israeli parliament speaker Dalia Itzik is making a last-ditch effort to salvage talks to form a new Israeli government.
Government officials say she's meeting with Prime Minister-designate Tzipi Livni.
Livni announced earlier Sunday that she had given up on coalition talks and would put Israel on course for early elections. Livni had been en route to formally convey that decision to President Shimon Peres when Itzik intervened.
Livni has been trying to cobble together a government since she replaced Prime Minister Ehud Olmert as head of the ruling Kadima Party in September. But partners in the current coalition used the changing of the guard to press new demands that she called "impossible" and "illegitimate."
