Iraq's Cabinet sends hydrocarbon law to parliament

A senior lawmaker says Iraq's parliament has received a draft hydrocarbons law.
Abdul-Hadi al-Hassani, deputy chairman of the parliamentary committee on oil, gas and natural resources, says the panel is reviewing the bill to prepare it for the legislature.
Iraq's Cabinet endorsed the bill in February 2007 but later disputes emerged between Kurds and the central government over who has the final say in managing oil and gas fields.
The bill has since gone through four versions.
The U.S. has been pressing for the new oil law to provide for a more equitable distribution of Iraq's oil riches. It also would encourage foreign oil companies to invest in the oil sector.
