Italy's Damiano Cunego won the Japan Cup cycling road race Sunday, edging compatriots Giovanni Visconti and Ivan Basso by less than a hundredth of a second.
Cunego, who won this event in 2005, won the 151-kilometer race in 4 hours, 4 minutes and 57 seconds while Visconti and Basso were second and third respectively.
Former Giro d'Italia winner Basso was making a return to professional cycling after a two-year doping suspension.
Valerio Agnoli, also of Italy, was fourth in 4:05:09.
Basso's Liquigas team won the team classification with a time of 12:16:28.
Italian authorities suspended Basso in 2006 after he confirmed that frozen blood found in Spain as part of the Operation Puerto investigation into blood doping was his. Basso has always maintained that though he gave his blood to Eufemiano Fuentes _ the Spanish doctor at the center of cycling's biggest doping investigation _ he never used it.
