Egypt: First female marriage registrar starts work

Egypt's state-owned news agency says the nation's first female marriage registrar has started work, a month after getting government approval.
The report says Amal Suleiman Afifi married a couple Saturday in the Delta town of Zaqaziq, some 75 kilometers (45 miles) north of Cairo.
Egypt's Ministry of Justice endorsed the 34-year-old Muslim woman as the country's first female marriage registrar in September, seven months after a family court approved her application.
The report said the court chose Afifi over 10 other male applicants for the job because of her "distinguished legal qualifications."
Conservative clerics and male colleagues have criticized the move, with some saying it is against Islam.
