Poutiainen leads World Cup giant slalom

Tanja Poutiainen led the season-opening women's World Cup giant slalom Saturday after the first leg.
The 28-year-old Finn timed 1 minute, 9.83 seconds down the Rettenbach course in a flawless run to lead Kathrin Zettel of Austria by 0.15 seconds.
Denise Karbon of Italy, who won five giant slalom races last season, was 0.64 behind Poutiainen in third.
Poutiainen, who has won two giant slaloms and seven World Cup titles, also led after the opening leg last year but was overtaken by Karbon in the second.
The 17-year-old Lara Gut of Switzerland finished fourth, 0.82 back from Poutiainen.
Anja Paerson struggled on the icy upper part of the course but finished strongly to come sixth, 0.95 behind the leader.
Defending overall World Cup champion Lindsey Vonn was 1.30 back in 10th. Olympic giant slalom champion Julia Mancuso was the first racer to start and posted the 18th fastest time, more than 2 seconds behind Poutiainen.
