EU parl't votes for Internet safety measures

The European Parliament has voted to approve a package of measures designed to protect children from danger on the Internet.
The bill calls for a "child safe" label for Web sites as well as hot lines in the 27 EU nations for the reporting of illegal content.
The European Union's assembly says children and parents are often unaware of the dangers posed by child pornography, violent sites, bullying or grooming over the Internet
Under the plan, the EU will set aside euro55 million (US$72.5 million) over the next five years to improve Web safety for children. The program aims to raise public awareness of the problems through information campaigns and to develop filters to block harmful content.
It was approved Wednesday by 672 votes to nine, with 19 abstentions.
