Yilan County picked to host 2009 Taiwan Lantern Festival

Yilan County has won the right to host the 2009 Taiwan Lantern Festival, a county official said late Friday night.
Yiu Wen-hsiang, head of the county government's Department of Business and Tourism, said that the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) Tourism Bureau has chosen the Yilan Sports Park in Yilan City as the site of next February's festival\.
The bureau launched the Taiwan Lantern Festival in 1990 to foster local culture and bring the traditions of Taiwan onto the international stage. Since its launch, the festival has grown to become one of Taiwan's largest and internationally best-known tourism events.
Yiu said that Yilan Magistrate Lu Kuo-hua had been striving since early this year to win the right to hold the festival. Lu sent a group of county officials to the 2008 festival held in Solar City, Southern Taiwan Science Park in Tainan County to learn more about hosting such an event, according to Yiu.
The county magistrate also recently led a delegation on a visit to the Tourism Bureau to promote its bid, Yiu said, adding that Yilan was able to beat out bids by four other counties, namely Hsinchu, Taoyuan, Nantou and Changhua.
The Yilan Sports Park was chosen because it met the Tourism Bureau's requirements that the site of the festival should have at least 1,500 parking spaces, as well as adequate shuttle bus services.
The park also met the bureau's requirement that the vicinity of the festival site have sufficient lodging, Yiu said, noting that Yilan City has over 8,000 hotel rooms to meet the needs of visitors to the festival.
According to Yiu, Lu welcomes the holding of such a major national festival in Yilan and hopes that it will help promote the eastern county's tourism industry and give a boost to the local economy.
