CAS rejects protest of sailing gold

Denmark will get to keep its 49er skiff gold medal in Olympic sailing after the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Sunday dismissed a protest over the Danes using a borrowed boat in the final.
The Danish crew of Jonas Warrer and Martin Kirketerp Ibsen were awarded the gold medal on Monday, but that decision was appealed by Spain and fourth-place Italy.
The Danish crew's mast had broken during practice ahead of the start in the gold-medal final. They went back to port and borrowed a boat from a Croatian crew _ with nationality markings CRO _ and managed to get across the start line just before the deadline.
Spain and Italy argued that because the boat had Croatian nationality markings, they did not realize it was the Danish crew. Warrer and Kirketerp finished seventh in the race, good enough to top the overall points standings.
A statement from CAS said the Italian and Spanish Olympic committees both demanded that the Danes be disqualified at a hearing in Beijing on Saturday.
"After having deliberated, the CAS arbitrators announced that both applications were dismissed," the statement said.
