Leasing industry business volume up due to tough economic times

Taiwan's leasing industry business volume reached NT$6.3 billion (US$200.6 million) for June, marking an increase of 13.84 percent over the figure for the same month a year earlier, according to the latest statistics released Saturday by the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

The ministry said that amid tough economic times and shrinking real incomes in Taiwan, more and more consumers with tighter budgets are opting to lease instead of buy new products to reduce their spending.

By sector, the construction machinery equipment leasing industry saw the largest increase in business volume for June, rising 17.34 percent year-on-year to reach NT$2.7 billion, followed by consumer products, up 13.99 percent to NT$1.2 billion, and automobile leasing,up 10.22 percent to NT$2.5 billion, according to the ministry's tallies.

For the first half of 2008, the leasing industry's business volume amounted to NT$35.5 billion, up 10.2 percent over the previous year's level, with consumer product leasing leading the way with a 10.45 percent increase in business, the ministry said.
