Investment in Kaohsiung Software Park tops NT$1.79 billion

The total investment in the Kaohsiung Software Technology Park as of late August reached nearly NT$1.8 billion (US$57.19 million), the Export Processing Zone Administration of the Ministry of Economic Affairs disclosed Friday.
A spokesman for the administration said the investment came from 56 approved investors who have decided to set up shop in the software park, and that the amount represented a substantial increase from the NT$12.2 billion recorded in June.
Of the accumulated total of NT$1.8 million, NT$713 million was invested in the first eight months of this year by 23 companies, according to the spokesman.
More investment is expected to pour into the park, as some 30 other companies have also expressed interest in setting up shop there, including the Hon Hai Group, the largest manufacturer of connectors for use in personal computers in Taiwan and a leading manufacturer of connectors and cable assemblies in the world.
Hon Hai Group Chairman Terry Gou signed a letter of intent with Minister of Economic Affairs Yiin Chii-ming in early June to invest in the park, with a plan to create some 3,000 jobs for software engineers.
The 7.9-hectare software park, located in the southern port city of Kaohsiung, was launched in 2001, with the main focus of developing digital content and audiovisual technology. It is one of the seven Export Processing Zones in Taiwan that offer land and facilities to companies dedicated to exports.
