Kanaeva leads rhythmic gymnastics qualifying

Evgeniya Kanaeva of Russia led the rhythmic gymnastics qualifying after the second day Friday.
Kanaeva was second entering Friday's competition but passed teammate Olga Kapranova with top scores in the club and ribbon portions of qualifying. Kapranova, who led after the rope and hoop portions, fell to second after scoring almost a point lower than Kanaeva in the ribbon.
Kanaeva finished qualifying with a 74.075 and Kapranova had a 72.900.
Ukraine's Anna Bessonova, who won the bronze in 2004, remained in third place with a score of 72.825 and Inna Zhukova of Belarus was fourth with a 70.950.
Belarus retained its lead in team qualifying with 34.950 points. Russia, which has won the last two all-around group titles, had the best score on Friday to move into second place with a 34.700. China was third with a 34.525.
The individual finals are scheduled for Saturday with the team finals set for Sunday.
