Georgia to play Euro qualifiers away

Georgia will play its first two Eurobasket qualifying matches on the road due to hostilities in the country.
FIBA said Friday that Georgia will play its Division B qualifiers at Luxembourg on Sept. 5 and then at Slovakia eight days later. Venues for the games, which were both originally set to be played in Tbilisi, will be announced at a later date.
"As things are not politically established, we cannot afford to take risks," FIBA Europe secretary general Nar Zanolin said. "We had to make a decision in advance so the teams can make their arrangements."
The second legs of both matches are scheduled to be played in Georgia in 2009.
Russian tanks remained in Georgia on Friday following a short but intense war that broke out Aug. 7 in South Ossetia, a separatist province in Georgia that has close ties to Russia.
