Chi Mei Group donates building to National Chiao Tung University

The Chi Mei Group -- the world's fourth-largest manufacturer of liquid crystal display panels in terms of revenue -- will donate a NT$440 million (US$14 million) building to National Chiao Tung University's Tainan campus in southern Taiwan, an executive of the group announced Friday.
Frank Liao, chairman of Chi Mei Corp. and Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. -- two subsidiaries of the Chi Mei Group -- said the building is scheduled to be completed by the end of August 2009 in time for the beginning of the fall semester.
The facility, to be named the "Chi Mei Building," will house Taiwan's first College of Optoelectronics with a view to cultivating more talent for the development of the electro-optical industry in southern Taiwan, Liao said.
According to Chiao Tung University President Wu Chung-yu, the new college will have three graduate institutes in the areas of electro-optical systems, lighting and energy, and biomedical imaging, plus an Optoelectronic Technology Research Center and a Biomedical Engineering Research Center.
Wu said the college will maintain close cooperation with the Chi Mei Group in optoelectronics research and development.
National Chiao Tung University's Tainan campus, which is still being developed, is located in Tainan County's Gueiren township and will cover an area of 49.2 hectares when completed.
