30%-40% hospital patients suffer from malnutrition: survey

Up to 40 percent of hospital inpatients suffer from malnutrition, with the ratio as high as between 50 percent and 60 percent for patients in gastroenterology and oncology wards, National Cheng Kung University Hospital said Friday.
Kao Ai-wen, director of the hospital's nutrition support service, said that if patients are malnourished before being admitted to the hospital, 80 percent of them will deteriorate after being admitted, according to the results of a survey.
Kao cited her hospital as an example, saying that "among the inpatients, 30 percent of them suffer from malnutrition, while 26 percent of colorectal patients have serious malnutrition."
Kao noted that nutrition plays a major role in treatment and that malnutrition not only add risks of complication and mortality but also dramatically increases the chances of infection, the number of days spent in hospital, and the medical costs.
