Typhoon Nuri approaches Hong Kong

Authorities in Hong Kong shut financial markets and canceled flights Friday as Typhoon Nuri bore down on the Chinese territory after triggering destruction in the Philippines that killed seven people.
Nuri was 80 kilometers southeast (50 miles) of the territory at noon (0400 GMT), forecast to move northwest, the Hong Kong Observatory said in a statement. It said the typhoon may hit Hong Kong directly later Friday.
The typhoon brought strong winds and rainfall to Hong Kong, but no major destruction had been reported as of noon.
The observatory said it recorded winds of up to 95 kilometers (59 miles) per hour.
Local airlines canceled flights, and offices, schools and financial markets were closed.
