Rabies alert in Serbia after infected cat found

The Serbian government says it has declared a rabies alert in three central municipalities after the disease was confirmed in a cat from the area.
Seven people from the area sought medical help and reported being attacked and bitten by cats. They included three school children.
The Ministry of Agriculture said in a statement Thursday that tests conducted on one of the cats confirmed it was infected with rabies.
The statement adds that emergency measures have been introduced to prevent a wider outbreak. Those include inoculation and registration of animals, as well as their removal from open areas.
The outbreak was reported in villages about 60 miles (100 kilometers) south of the capital Belgrade.
