Fewer children enrolling, says Taipei city government

A total of 24,452 children are expected to be admitted into elementary schools in Taipei City this fall, nearly 4,000 less than the previous year, the Education Department under the Taipei city government reported yesterday.
The number of 2008 first graders marked the greatest decline in this group in 20 years, the Education Department said.
Given the declining number of pre-school children, the number of first grade classes is also expected to shrink - by 133 classes this fall - a department official said.
"Only 12 elementary schools around Taipei City are expected to have full recruitment this year," said the official.
Meanwhile, he said, declining enrollment means that there is a need for fewer first-graded teachers, whose numbers are expected to decrease by 226 citywide this year.
As to whether elementary schools in Taipei City should be merged or closed, the official said it is too early to speculate.
