Policeman shot in Changhua, fighting for his life in hospital

A policeman was struggling for his life yesterday after being shot by a suspect armed with an M16 assault rifle, police in Changhua County said.
Police agents Liu Fu-hsing and Hsiao Jui-neng went out to inspect a suspect vehicle that was parked in the township of Tienchung yesterday morning at around 4:40, police said.
Sprayed bullets
Liu ordered the driver to come out of the vehicle, but as the man did as he was asked, he opened fire and sprayed police with bullets from the rifle.
Liu fell down gravely injured behind the suspect's car, while Hsiao fired at the fleeing man, police said.
The suspect, Hsiao Poh-jen, is a former army deserter with a police record including extortion with violence and conversion of weapons, police said.
Better armed
Liu was injured in the right eye and also in the chest. His life was still in danger late yesterday evening, doctors at the Changhua Christian Hospital said.
"The criminals are better armed than the police," his father commented to local cable station Sanlih.
The shooting was the latest in a series of violent incidents in Central Taiwan.
Earlier this month, a gang fired twenty bullets from M16 rifles at a businessman in Changhua City in broad daylight. The suspects are still on the run.
