Cormier out at 96 kg due to hydration problems

American freestyle wrestler Daniel Cormier became severely dehydrated after making weight for Thursday's matches at 96 kilograms and withdrew before he was to wrestle.
According to national governing body USA Wrestling, Cormier weighed in Wednesday afternoon at the China Agriculture University gymnasium but became ill shortly thereafter and was treated by the USOC medical staff at the athletes' village.
He was then taken to a local hospital with severe dehydration and cramping _ a problem, if untreated, can lead to a reduced blood output, kidney malfunction and other severe health problems.
Cormier remained hospitalized Thursday and was unlikely to return to normal for another 12 to 24 hours. USOC chief medical officer Dr. William Kuprevich said he was never unconscious and his situation never advanced to being life-threatening.
Cormier's kidney functions were being monitored and that he was receiving intravenous fluids and undergoing blood and urine testing, Kuprevich said. Cormier was improving the longer he received the fluids and, unless there are complications, it is unlikely the problem will affect him long-term, Kuprevich said.
"It wasn't in his best interests to wrestle," Kuprevich told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "His kidneys are functioning and the IV is continuing. He's doing what you would expect in such a recovery."
Because Cormier had already weighed in, the United States could not enter a replacement wrestler at his weight.
Cormier, the only returning U.S. freestyle wrestler from the Athens Olympics, was considered to have a good chance of winning a medal. He was third in the world last year and was fourth in the 2004 Olympics, and won both the U.S. nationals and the Olympic trials in Las Vegas.
Cormier also had a favorable bracket, with gold medal favorite Shirvani Muradov of Russia in the opposite bracket. Cormier also did not have to wrestle a qualification bout and would have needed to win only three matches to reach the finals.
Cormier, 29, has wrestled extensively on the international circuit since 2002.
