Portugal beats Faeroes 5-0 in Queiroz's return

Portugal downed Faeroe Islands 5-0 in a friendly on Wednesday to give Carlos Queiroz a winning start to his second spell as coach.
Carlos Martins, Simao Sabrosa, Duda, Bruno Alves and Nani scored the goals in Queiroz's first match in charge since November, 1993, when he quit after failing to lead Portugal to the 1994 World Cup finals.
Queiroz, who has also coached Real Madrid and had two spells as assistant at Manchester United, has replaced Luiz Felipe Scolari. The Brazilian ended his five-year tenure in June by joining Chelsea.
"I'm very happy and especially excited by the Portuguese display. We moved the ball around well and we managed to create a lot of chances. We're ready for the next phase of work," Queiroz said.
Portugal, lacking injured Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo, dominated from the start and goalkeeper Quim saw little action.
After spurning several chances, Portugal took the lead in the 23rd minute when Martins, who was recalled to the team by the new coach, netted on his second attempt following Deco's corner.
Simao headed in Portugal's second goal in the 48th from a cross by substitute Miguel, who had replaced injured right back Jose Bosingwa in the 35th.
The second half was disrupted by a host of substitutions and it wasn't until the last five minutes that the home team added further goals.
Duda, a second-half replacement for Simao, headed in 3-0 after striker Hugo Almeida fluffed Nani's cross.
Alves, who had substituted for Ricardo Carvalho, scored the fourth in the 89th from a corner and Nani sealed the comfortable win with a shot in the first minute of injury time.
Portugal visits Malta and then hosts Denmark in September to start its Group 1 qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The Faeroe Islands, which have won just twice in 20 years of international soccer, visits Serbia and then hosts Romania in Group 7.
