Zenit refuses to sell Arshavin to Tottenham

Zenit St. Petersburg will not sell Andrei Arshavin to Tottenham this year after the Premier League club failed to meet a deadline to conclude a deal.
The Russian club said Wednesday that it had wanted to wrap up the playmaker's transfer Monday to give it two weeks to sign a replacement before the transfer deadline closes on Aug. 31.
"Zenit considers the question of the player going to Tottenham to be closed," the club said in a statement on its Web site.
Arshavin's agent had said that Zenit wanted euro25 million (US$37 million) for the 27-year-old Arshavin, who helped lead Russia to the semifinals at June's European Championship. Spurs, though, would not pay more than euro22 million (US$32 million) as it still looks to sell striker Dimitar Berbatov to Manchester United.
Zenit said it had asked Spurs to make an improved bid by Monday.
"However, Zenit has so far not received the given proposals," the club said. "Considering the end of the deadline ... but also considering the fact of the uncertainty of the situation, it does not permit the club time to seek a replacement for Andrei."
