Argentina over Greece 80-78 in basketball

San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobli scored 24 points and former Toronto Raptor Carlos Delfino added 23 to propel defending Olympic champion Argentina into the Olympic basketball semifinals with an 80-78 win over Greece on Wednesday.
In an incredibly tight game between two closely matched teams, winning came down to a matter of seconds.
With Argentina ahead 80-75, Panagiotis Vassilopoulos drained a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left. Ginobli said he "nearly died" on seeing the shot, but Greece was prevented from pressing its advantage before Argentina ran down the clock, the final buzzer sounding amid a last-minute struggle for the ball under the Argentine basket.
The score couldn't have been much closer at halftime, with Greece ahead 40-39. The fourth quarter began with Argentina ahead 56-55, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Delfino quickly helped put the champions ahead 62-55 and Argentina never again relinquished the lead.
Argentina next faces the United States, who defeated Australia 116-85 Wednesday and is unbeaten in the tournament.
Ginobli didn't give his team very good odds against Kobe Bryant and the Americans.
"There's not much of a chance, only a very, very small one (of winning)," he said.
Greece coach Panagiotis Giannakis declared the game against Argentina one of the best of the tournament.
"Details make the difference," Giannakis said.
Antonis Fotsis led the scoring for Greece with 17 points, while Kostas Tsartsaris contributed 13.
Earlier Wednesday, Sarunas Jasikevicius scored 23 points to lead Lithuania to a 94-68 win over host China in the quarterfinals. That sets up a Friday semifinal matchup between the 2000 Sydney Olympics bronze medalists and world champions Spain, who earlier downed Croatia 72-59.
