A group of students and instructors from Tatung University are set to head to Vietnam Aug. 23 on a volunteer mission to help improve the quality of the Southeast Asian nation's information education.
The university held a send-off ceremony Wednesday for the three doctoral students and two master's students who will be led by chief instructor Hung Wen-hua on the trip to Hue Province in central Vietnam.
During their stay in the province, the students will head to elementary and junior high schools and kindergartens to offer assistance in improving information education. They will provide instruction on simple computer maintenance and software use, and will training seed teachers in information education.
The university has also collected second-hand computers to donate to schools in the province in order to allow students there to continue receiving information education.
The volunteer mission to Vietnam is the first of its kind since the university implemented new regulations last year requiring new students to engage in at least 18 hours of volunteer work in one semester.
The regulation was implemented as part of the university's efforts to expand the students' international vision and encourage them to carry out their duties as global citizens.
The university said it is hoped that through such volunteer missions, the participating students will also gain a deeper sense of caring for the international society, use the professional skills and knowledge they have gained in a practical setting, and help improve Taiwan's exchanges and relations with other countries.
