Midfielder Claude Makelele retires from France after Euro 2008 exit

France midfielder Claude Makelele ended his international career after Tuesday's 2-0 to Italy at the European Championship.
The 35-year-old Makelele, who earned his 71st cap for Les Bleus, wants the next generation of French football to get their chance.
"I always said that this was my last competition," Makelele said. "I got an enormous amount of pleasure from wearing this jersey. I think the new generation must work, and stick together. And I am behind them all the way."
Makelele, who plays for Chelsea, made his debut for France in a friendly match against Norway in 1995 and played at Euro 2004 and the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.
