Myanmar frees party members
The political party of Aung San Suu Kyi says 15 of its members detained last month for marching to the opposition leader's home have been freed by Myanmar's military rulers.
The National League for Democracy members were detained on May 27 after they marched from the party's headquarters to Suu Kyi's home to demand her release from house arrest. Party spokesman Nyan Win says all 15 were released Monday night.
Vanuatu 5.8 quake
Officials say a moderately strong earthquake has rattled southern Vanuatu in the South Pacific, but there are no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The U.S. Geological Survey said yesterday's 5.8-magnitude tremblor was centered 28 miles southwest of the capital, Port Vila.
PRC fireworks ban
Fireworks will be banned across the Chinese capital for three months in the latest in a series of security measures ahead of the August Beijing Olympics, state media said yesterday. Public transport has been subject to stringent security checks, and liquids, matches and lighters have been banned on domestic flights.
