Ex-footballer Claridge handed six-month suspended jail sentence for dangerous driving

Former Portsmouth manager and TV pundit Steve Claridge was spared jail Tuesday on dangerous driving charges, but disqualified from driving for 12 months.
Birmingham Crown Court judge Peter Carr sentenced Claridge to a six-month jail term, suspended for two years, and ordered him to do 150 hours unpaid community service.
The court was told the 42-year-old Claridge was driving at speeds of around 100 mph (160 kph) in treacherous conditions in December 2006.
But Claridge denied he was driving dangerously or that it was raining and told jurors that he was speeding because he was trying to find a toilet.
Claridge was a journeyman striker who played for more than a dozen clubs, including Portsmouth, Leicester and Birmingham.
