Taiwan shares fall to lowest level since March 20

Taiwan's benchmark index fell Tuesday its its lowest level since March 20, reflecting general weakness on regional bourses.
The Weighted Price Index of the Taiwan Stock Exchange dropped 217.96 points, or 2.54 percent, to close at 8,370.0.
Edward Lin of Fubon Securities said the sell-off was precipitated by the Taiex's breaching of a major support level.
"Selling accelerated after the main index fell below ... 8,500," he said.
Tech heavyweights led the decliners, with High Tech Computer down 6.9 percent to NT$765.00, and TSMC falling 2.1 percent to NT$63.90.
By sector, tourism dipped 5.5 percent and construction declined 4.8 percent.
Formosa International Hotels lost 6.3 percent to close at NT$684.00, while Shining Building Business shed 5.8 percent to NT$86.00.
