Czech GDP growth slows down to 5.3 percent in first quarter of 2008

The Czech economy expanded by 5.3 percent in the first quarter of 2008, the Czech Statistical Office reported Tuesday.
GDP growth is slowing down due to lower household and government expenditure, it said. The Czech economy grew by 6.3 percent in the last quarter of 2007.
Despite the slowdown, the Czech Republic, an EU member since 2004, is among the fastest-growing emerging economies of the former Soviet bloc.
The economy is driven by the country's export-oriented manufacturing sector, car production and road-building.
