Greek telecoms workers strike over Deutsche Telekom deal

Employees of Greece's largest telecoms company are on strike to protest a deal with Germany's Deutsche Telekom AG on sharing ownership and management control of the company.
The workers want the Greek state to retain control of OTE, the country's former monopoly telecoms operator. Their union has declared a 24-hour strike for Tuesday. But it says OTE workers in areas hit by a 6.5 magnitude earthquake in southwestern Greece on Sunday are exempt from the strike so they can work to repair damage to telephone lines.
The government reached the agreement with Deutsche Telekom in May, but labor unions and opposition political parties strongly object.
