Ruud van Nistelrooy and Wesley Sneijder scored Monday to give the Netherlands a 2-0 halftime lead over Italy at the European Championship.
Van Nistelrooy had already had two chances when, from what appeared to a clear offside position, he stuck out a leg to redirect a 26th-minute shot from the left past goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. Referee Peter Frojdfeldt waved away Italy's protests and gave a yellow card to Luca Toni.
The World Cup champions had no complaints about the second goal five minutes later. Dirk Kuyt headed Giovanni van Bronckhorst's crossfield pass into the area and Sneijder hooked the ball passed Buffon at the near post.
It was almost 3-0 in the 43rd but Buffon saved a low shot by Van Nistelrooy.
