France captain Patrick Vieira stays on with France squad despite injury scare at Euro 2008

France captain Patrick Vieira will stay with the France squad at the European Championship despite a recent injury to his left thigh, a French official said Monday.
Although the midfielder is ruled out of Monday's match against Romania because of a small left thigh tear, Vieira is now in contention to play against either the Netherlands on Friday, or Italy on June 17.
"Patrick is getting better," Domenech said. "He will prepare calmly with the rest of the group for what I hope will be a few more weeks."
Mathieu Flamini, called up as cover for Vieira after the Inter Milan midfielder quit a training session grimacing with pain on May 30, now goes home after training with the team in Switzerland.
"It's not a complicated decision," Domenech said Sunday. "One stays and one goes."
Vieira, who is competing in a seventh consecutive major tournament, looked comfortable jogging around, stretching, jumping and taking part in a short practice match when he returned to training four days ago. He has trained normally with the French team since.
Vieira missed all three of France's warm-up matches and has also been troubled by a sore thigh all season, restricting him to less than half of Inter Milan's matches as it won the Serie A title.
The 31-year-old Vieira limped out of a training session on May 30, the day before he was set to start against Paraguay.
Flamini was one of the seven players cut from Domenech's provisional 30-man squad when he named his original 23 on May 28.
