Berdych beats Johansson to open grass-court season at Halle

Tomas Berdych served nine aces and beat Sweden's Thomas Johansson 6-3, 7-5 Monday to move into the second round of the Gerry Weber Open.
The 12th-ranked Czech's third break of Johansson serve gave him a decisive 6-5 lead in the second set, and he finished the match in one hour, 17 minutes at the grass-court event, a key tuneup for Wimbledon.
Berdych took the crown last year with Roger Federer absent, following four straight years the Swiss had won the event en route to his Wimbledon titles. Two years ago, the Czech was beaten in the final by Federer.
Mischa Zverev, a 20-year-old German, earned the first upset, beating seventh-seeded Jarkko Niemeinen 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. He landed 73 percent of his first serves against the Finn, who is ranked 72 places higher at No. 25.
Federer plays his first match Wednesday against 89th-ranked Michael Berrer of Germany, looking to extend his record 54-match winning streak on grass that dates back to 2002.
The top-ranked Swiss is coming off Sunday's straight-set loss to Rafael Nadal in the French Open final. He won just four games _ the most one-sided Roland Garros final since 1977.
"This is a good chance to beat him," said Berrer, who took a set off Federer in the last meeting at Basel in October.
Germany's Andreas Beck fought off a match point to beat France's Marc Gicquel, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 6-3 and countryman Philipp Kohlschreiber ousted another Frenchman, Julien Benneteau, 6-4, 6-1.
