Brazil expects grain production to rise by 8.7 percent in 2008

Brazil expects grain production to rise 8.7 percent this year, as the world faces increased food shortages.
The agriculture ministry said Monday it expects the 2007-2008 grain harvest to reach 143.3 million tons compared with 131.8 million tons last year.
The ministry attributes the rise to higher prices internationally, favorable weather and new technologies.
Soybeans and corn accounted for 83 percent of the harvest last year, but wheat production is increasing and is expected to reach 5.2 million tons.
Brazil imports most of its wheat and recently launched a program to stimulate production after Argentina suspended exports so it can supply its internal market.
