Tennis player Yang wins French Open
The young Taiwan tennis player Tsung-Hua Yang, who won the junior boys singles title at the French Open, has made history not only in Taiwan but also in Asia, a proud official of the Chinese Taipei Tennis Association said in Taipei Sunday.
The official said Yang, who beat Poland's 12th seed Jerzy Jankowicz 6-3, 7-6(7/5) to win the title earlier that day in Paris, is the first Taiwan player to ever win a title in the Grand Slam tennis tournaments. Yang also made history for Taiwan when he qualified for the finals of the junior boys championship in the Australian Open in January this year. Another player Yeu Tzuoo Wang was also the first Taiwanese to qualify for the finals of the junior boys singles at the U.S. Open in 2001, the official said.
Yang is also the first Asian player ever to have won a title at in Grand Slam since Leander Paes of India won the junior boys singles title in the U.S. Open in 1991, said the official.
Afternoon storms
Thunderstorm showers are expected this afternoon in most areas around northern Taiwan, as well as in mountains in Taoyuan and Nantou counties, according to forecasts released by the Central Weather Bureau (中央氣象局) last evening.
Except for central and southern Taiwan, most other areas will see thunderstorms similar to those in Taipei City yesterday afternoon, with precipitations reaching 98.5 millimeters in Hsinyi district and 93.5 millimeters in Gungguan area.
