Bangladesh to free ex-prime minister
Bangladesh's army-backed emergency government is preparing to free former premier Sheikh Hasina Wajed from detention on corruption charges, her lawyer said yesterday. Sheikh Hasina, who led the country from 1996 to 2001 and heads the Awami League party, is expected to be allowed to travel to the U.S.for medical treatment for ear and eye problems, said Kamrul Islam.
Muslims rally ban
Thousands of white-clad Muslims took to the streets of the Indonesian capital yesterday to demand the government ban a minority Islamic sect branded "deviant" by top clerics. Around 5,000 protesters wearing white skullcaps and Islamic headscarves blocked the street in front of Jakarta's presidential palace to demand the government to ban the Ahmadiyah sect.
Baby deaths
Seven more babies have died this month of a blood infection in a Manila area hospital in June, a Philippine health official said yesterday, amid a probe into sanitary conditions at the facility. The country's health department launched an investigation at the neonatal ward of the Ospital Ng Makati.
