Before darkness
One of the last shipments to a United States research base in Antarctica before the onset of winter darkness was a year's supply of condoms, a New Zealand newspaper reported on Monday.
Bill Henriksen, the manager of the McMurdo base station, said nearly 16,500 condoms were delivered last month and would be made available, free of charge, to staff throughout the year to avoid the potential embarrassment of having to buy them.
The first sunrise will occur on August 20 and McMurdo's population will start to increase again in September when supply flights resume, peaking at more than 1,000 during the summer period.
Rapper arrested
Rapper Warren G has been arrested on drug-related charges after police pulled over the car he was riding in.
Police say the 35-year-old rap artist, whose real name is Warren Griffin III, was arrested shortly after 1:30 a.m. Sunday in Hollywood after the car he was a passenger in was pulled over for a red light violation. Officer Karen Smith says marijuana was found inside the vehicle.
Both Griffin and the driver, Ryan Butler, were booked for investigation of possession of a controlled substance. They each posted US$20,000 bail and were released.
Nuns in chains
Two nuns chained themselves in front of the Vatican on Sunday to get Pope Benedict XV's attention claiming they had been turned away from their convent, local media reported.
Dressed in Carmelite habits, the nuns said they were not allowed back into their convent in central Italy when they returned after leaving for health reasons in 2005.
The unusual protest took place near where the Pope traditionally gives his Sunday noon Angelus prayer overlooking Saint Peter's Square. The Vatican issued no comment on the incident.
