The beautiful island of Taiwan is renowned for its luscious fruits, thanks to the tropical climate and rich soils. June 1 to July 31, Silks House - Grand Formosa Regent Taipei's Cantonese restaurant on the third floor - incorporates these gifts of nature into its menus, serving up dish after dish of mouth-watering hot plates featuring wax apples, kiwis, lychees, star fruits, pineapples, and more. These 27 dishes promise to whet the appetite even in the sweltering heat of the summer.
The dishes available at the Fantastic Formosa Fruit Fare are truly versatile, and Silks House's Executive Chef Wu Hongchen especially recommends the following dishes. Crispy Matsusaka Pork with Pineapple - a creative mixture of select Matsusaka pork and shrimp paste coupled with tangy pineapple bits, deep-fried to a golden color and enjoyed with a special sweet and sour dip. Lychee Shrimp & Meat Ball Duo - whole lychees are pitted and then stuffed with shrimp paste or pork paste; the fruitiness of these white ping-pong balls is out of this world.
Steamed Live Grouper with Plum Sauce & Star Fruit - grouper fish, known for its excellent texture, is marinated in 100% plum juice, steamed, then served with juicy bits of star fruit. Grilled Guava Chicken Wings - chefs first remove the bones from the chicken wings, then stuff them with guava flesh that has been marinated in sugar and vinegar for two days; they are then toasted to a golden brown for a fragrant delicacy.
Other not-to-be-missed dishes include Pineapple and Fish Roe Fried Rice, Stir-fried Wax Apple with Lily Bulbs, Deep-fried Shrimp with Avocado, Cold Kiwi & Lobster Rolls, Stir-fried Pork Ribs with Orange Sauce, Stir-fried Fresh Scallops with Sweet Melon, and more.
As fruits are a common ingredient in desserts, the tropical fruits from the beautiful island also known as Formosa are logically also concocted into the various Cantonese desserts at Silks House. Sweet Bird's Nest Soup in Apple - the rare delicacy is ladled into a hallow-centered apple and cooked for half an hour for the perfect balance. Sweet Frog's Cream Soup in Papaya - frog's cream and sugar are stewed for three long hours, then placed in a papaya bowl for a highly nutritious treat.
Pan-fried Sliced Mango - fresh mango slices are lightly breaded and skilleted to be enjoyed with peanut powder. Golden Banana Balls - deep-fried pieces of banana with lots of azuka bean paste, dazzled with thin pieces of gold for a luxurious finish to a fabulous meal.
A la carte items at the Fantastic Formosa Fruit Fare start at NT$130. A Formosan Fruit Set is also available with Fresh Scallop with Sliced Mango and Caviar, Lychee Shrimp & Meat Ball Duo, Passion Fruit Chicken Slices in Pumpkin, Braised Fish Maw with Coconut, Steamed Live Grouper with Plum Sauce and Star Fruit, Deep-fried Shrimp with Avocado / Grilled Guava Chicken Wings, Steamed Rice Dumpling with Pumpkin and Ginseng Flavor, Golden Banana Balls and Sweet Bird's Nest Soup in Apple at NT$2,680 per person.
