Unitech launches solar cell

Unitech Printed Circuit Board Corp., a major printed circuit board and cellphone circuit board producer in Taiwan, announced that it will demonstrate its solar cell production and show its accomplishment. The first ones will be installed in vehicles and Unitech will test drive the cars in June. The estimated mass production date is set to be in the third quarter of 2008. It is predicted that the solar cell battery will bring Unitech between NT$800 million and NT$1 billion in revenue. If the supply chain remains efficient, the revenue in next year will be even bigger.
Price war among printed circuit board suppliers has become more and more severe because the supply is exceeding the demand in the market. Gross profit and profitability have gone lower and lower. Thus, in recent years, printed circuit board producers have thought of developing new niche market. Taking Unitech as an example, it not only produces cellphone boards, but also develops solar cell battery with silicon material.
Unitech first chose Yilan as its location to build new plants last year and planned to invest NT$945 million for facilities and building construction. In June, 2007, board of directors in Unitech passed the US$25 million corporate bond convertible, private fund-raising bill. The most significant part of this bill was that CLSA Capital Partners of CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets joined Unitech and has become its partner in solar cell production.
