Iraq beats Australia 1-0 in World Cup qualifier to keep slim hopes of advancing alive

Emad Mohammed scored a long-range free kick to lead Iraq over Australia 1-0 Saturday in a World Cup qualifier.
Mohammed shot from more than 25 meters (yards) in the 28th minute.
Asian Cup champion Iraq, which last qualified for a World Cup in 1986, needed the victory to keep its slim hopes of advancing alive.
"This is a fantastic result for us, because Australia is perhaps not only the best team in our group, but in Asia," Iraqi coach Adnan Hamd said.
Despite the loss, Australia remains on top of Group 1 with seven points _ the same as Qatar but with a better goal difference. Iraq, which has four points, is one spot above last-place China.
The top two teams advance to the fourth and final round of Asian qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
