Oman draws with Japan 1-1 in World Cup qualifier

Oman drew with Japan 1-1 Saturday in a World Cup qualifier after the host team failed to convert a penalty kick in the second half.
Oman midfielder Ahmed Mubarak scored with a free kick in the 11th minute.
Japan equalized in the 53rd when Yasuhito Endo scored from the penalty spot after Oman defender Khalifa Ayil tripped striker Keiji Tamada.
Five minutes later, Oman striker Fouzi Bashir had his penalty kick saved by Seigo Narazaki after Hashim Saleh was knocked down by Marcus Tulio Tanaka.
Oman's newly appointed interim coach Hamad al-Azzani apologized to fans at the end of the game.
Al-Azzani took over Wednesday after Uruguayan Julio Cesar Ribas was fired following Oman's 3-0 defeat last week to Japan.
With two rounds left, Japan is second in Group 2 with seven points, three ahead of third-place Oman. Bahrain leads with 10 points.
The top two teams advance to the fourth and final round of Asian qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
