New Approach won the English Derby on Saturday by half a length.
The Jim Bolger-trained colt pushed ahead in the final furlong to storm past Tartan Bearer (6-1) over the line. Casual Conquest, the pre-race favorite, was third.
Kevin Manning rode New Approach, a 5-1 shot, from the rear to win his and Bolger's first English classic.
"He has got a serious, serious engine," Manning said. "He took a bit of a tug early on and got further back than I would have liked, but coming down the hill I had loads of horse and just hoped the gaps would come.
"He's just very, very classy."
Bolger riled the racing fraternity by only entering New Approach into the English classic on Monday _ reversing an earlier decision.
The Irish trainer had said the two-year-old horse wouldn't be ready for Epsom and would be saved for the Irish Derby on home soil.
"I thought that winning the Derby would be up there with the best days, but this is the best day that I have had in racing," Bolger said. "(Kevin) kept his calm and did everything right and didn't panic. He had a huge job managing to steer him and he did it with great style."
