CTPC president will lead athletes to Beijing for September games

Taiwan's Paralympic team will not be led by 1st lady

First lady Chow Mei-ching was not planning to lead Taiwan's team to the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games, announced the Presidential Office yesterday.
"Chow said she would like to thank the people for suggesting that she should lead the team, but she does not have any plans to visit China for now," said Presidential Office Spokesman Wang Yu-chi yesterday in a press conference.
The announcement came after recommendations by Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) to President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) that the first lady would be the best choice to lead Taiwan's athletes to the games due to be held in the Forbidden City.
Wang argued that Chow would advance the cause of caring for people with disabilities, and that her presence would help upgrade the nation's profile.
According to Wang, the president said that he would make an assessment, but Wang has yet to receive further information.
During the tenure of former President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁), the wheelchair-bound former first lady, Wu Shu-jen, led Taiwan's team to the Paralympics in Athens, Greece in 2004.
Chow, who recently quit her job at Mega International Commercial Bank where she had served for 27 years, has agreed to serve as the head of a cultural and educational foundation under the auspices of a Mega-affiliated bank.
She also accepted the offer to serve as honorary chairwoman of the Red Cross Society of the Republic of China.
According to Lai Fu-huan, a Chinese Taipei Paralympics Committee managing director, Chen Li-chou, president of the CTPC would actually lead Taiwan's team to the games due to be held September 6-17 in the Chinese capital after the Summer Olympics have finished.
Lai said on Friday that, due to the fact that team member registration for the games has officially ended, if Chow attends the event, she will not be part of Taiwan's team.
He stressed that all members have been confirmed, but if China is willing to extend an invitation to Chow, then that would be fine.
The multi-sport event for athletes with physical, mental and sensorial disabilities, are held every four years, following the Olympic Games, and are governed by the International Paralympic Committee.
